It must be a good sign when great truths are self evident to a five year old

By Laura

The other day, while Jim was cooking and as the TV was turned on to the news Olaia shares her comments. She hurrahs when she sees the soldiers coming home and wonders why the news report on their return is so short. She can identify with the joy she felt knowing her Daddy was back home after a 90 day military absence. Then she asks why are more soldiers going back if they already caught the bad ruler. Jim and I try to explain that there are still some people that are angry and want to make things the way they were. These people worked for the bad ruler and are used to the way he did things, scaring and hurting people.

The news then flashes to police arresting a woman who killed her children and I wish Olaia would not catch any of it but she does. "Mommy why are that women that way?" "Sometimes people are just sick, their brain is sick and they do bad things.

Olaia then walks to the kitchen and I change the channel before more horribly depresing news reveals to our daughter the despair and violence of the world. In the kitchen I overhear her explain to Jim: "Daddy, bad people have God in their hearts they just don't feel Him. They need to listen to Papa Dios."

At a time when it is all too common and too easy to disassociate ourselves from the violence and despair by calling those who commit violence monsters, Olaia reminded Jim and me that God is in them just as much as He is in us.
